I admit that when I first started my journey on being more self-aware I didn’t quite get this concept. But that is because I was scared. I was clinging on to anything that seemed like I could control despite the fact that my life was hurling out of control.

Once I took the leap of faith in myself, I saw that I could help more by being of service to others. A desire was ignited in me to help others. Through helping others I found that my dreams were also realized. I discovered opportunities for deeper learning for both the client and myself. It made the work so much more fulfilling.

Often we think being of service conflicts with making a darn good living. I believe it is quite the contrary. You lead with service and receive benefit ten-fold. Serving others fans the flame of dreams and keeps it buoyed. It instills such a wonderful sense of accomplishment – not based in surface ego, but in knowing you truly helped somebody.

And when you help somebody great things naturally come your way. I remember one time I decided to ‘pay it forward’ at a Starbucks. Then what do you know – they had made two drinks incorrectly before my order and gave me those drinks to take back to the office where I worked at the time. One small kind gesture multiplied by a return to not only me (in getting extra drinks for free), but also to my teammates at the time as they were the recipients of the free drinks.

Being of service also does not require a grandiose gesture. It can be as small as holding a door open for someone, or paying for their coffee. The Universe sends kudos back your way. So try it! You’ll like it!
