Are you eye deep in planning for 2014? Do you have everything figured out? Are you making list after list after list?

Well now, as with everything…. It’s about moderation.

Planning is a crucial part of running a business, and even running a life! We need to define what is important to us, set goals and outline actionable steps to achieve those goals. This is all very important.

But remember to run the plan, not let the plan run you!blue_print_grid_tools_400_clr_9779

By this I mean it is imperative that we remain in charge of our plan. I see too many people create a plan and then stick to that plan NO MATTER WHAT! And in the end, even though they may have achieved what they set out to they are disappointed.

They stick to the plan and never look up so even though they hit their target, the target is no longer relevant. Things happen. Life changes. And while it is so important to have a plan, it must remain flexible enough to handle modification. Plans, especially a longer term plan such as a plan for 2014 achievements, are guidelines. They must be adaptable so they can handle changes along the way.

It is so important to keep an eye on the plan and an eye up ahead. When circumstances change, change the plan! Your plan should be kept up to date.

And you need to be careful of the other side of the spectrum. It never helps to spend time creating a plan never to look at it again in 2014. What good does that do other than to pat ourselves on the back that we made a plan? Going through the motions without really investing in following a plan can be disastrous. When this happens I see folks never achieving much in the way of goals or traction for their business, and their motivation wanes quickly. This can lead to standing still or worse, sliding backwards.

Here are some tips on keeping that plan applicable along the way:

It is very important to plan. Just make sure you incorporate this plan. Take it along with you, review it, modify it as necessary, and let it serve as your roadmap to success.
