Take a Look at Your LifeTake a quick look at your life. Is it full of the fruition of conscious choices? Or is it full of happenstance?

Are you doing what you love? Or are you allowing life and others to dictate what you should be doing?

Are you filled with passion for each day? Or are you living a life of going through the motions?

Now while these questions can actually fuel an entire book I want to begin to scratch the surface on one aspect. Are you consciously creating your life?

I remember a time when I was moving from job to job about every four years. I chalked it up to my innate ability to get bored too easily. The next new shiny job would hold the challenge and excitement I was looking for. But then, as per my M.O., a few years in I was as bored and unengaged as I was with the previous job.

I thought this was just how living as a grown-up was. Because you HAD to have a “good” J-O-B, right? You had to step into a pre-existing occupation that was deemed successful. You had to fill the vacancy someone else was looking to fill, right?

Wow – was I ever WRONG!

I was not consciously creating my life. I was letting others and the circumstances of others dictate what I was doing. No wonder I was so disengaged! Now wonder I was just going through the motions. No wonder I was unhappy. No wonder I was depressed.

See where I’m going with this?

We are trained from an early age to build our life around an idea of what will be successful. There are cultural ideas of what successful jobs look like. We are taught that we should be in pursuit of these jobs, and then we will be defined as successful.

This is all so external! No wonder people are unhappy with their lives. They have based it all on external factors! They are ignoring themselves in the equation of life.

Being a conscious creator of your life requires a mental shift. These where we stop building our life around what is deemed or accepted as successful, and instead we find what our calling is and build a life around that! It seems so unfortunate that the latter is definitely the minority of how people live.

There is a reason we all have unique talents. No two folks on Earth are alike. That is not just coincidence.

We all bring different talents to the Universal table.

Our talents are there for a reason. Our interests manifest themselves and represent our calling. We are just conditioned to tune that out. And that is a shame.

So now take another quick look at your life. Are there areas where you could make that shift and become a conscious creator in your life? Are there places where you could grow your life around you and your talents?

Now for those who follow my writings, you know I am a huge fan of baby steps. This is not a call to chuck it all in right now and pursue your latest muse. But can you identify a place in your life where you could really consciously create what that looks like?

Take some time and really see where you are living for others. Are you truly happy and fulfilled? Or do you long for something different? That longing is a sign. Heed it and start consciously creating a life you love to live. You’ll be amazed at the difference!

  1. I so agree with your idea of consciously creating your life. It is how I’ve lived most of my life and 20 years ago discovered programs and courses that give deeper guidance to the process. Great post.

  2. I’ve recently thought about how different my life would be if I had followed a trajectory that I started in the corporate world right after getting my MBA. Instead, I did a 90-degree turn and started my own business in 1986. Not everything has been perfect, but I haved live every day pretty much as a result of MY decision, My choice. I think that’s what you mean by conscious creation? 😉

  3. I made a conscious choice to live an inspired and intential life many years ago. I haven’t had a j.o.b. in 30 years. The only way to live is on purpose and to step into your God given gifts and thrive!

  4. Great post, Lynn! I like the call to be a “conscious creator”. I think one of our biggest struggles is to live authentically. With so much external noise, we need to practice tuning in to our inner call, and valuing our unique talents and gifts. And we can do each of those with baby steps!

  5. Love your article! You are spot on, so many are allowing others to dictate the results of their lives instead of taking charge and making it happen for themselves. That’s why I love owning my own business… I can control the things I can and should control and create the life I want.

    1. That is so awesome Don! I know I was guilty of following others and their idea of what success was. I am so glad I learned to be a conscious creator of my own life!

  6. I don’t think we’re ever wrong it’s all about being aware. Once you are aware you realize what you are doing, and it doesn’t have to be good or bad. Thanks for the great post!

    1. You are absolutely right on! It was wonderfully liberating to let go of the attachment to money. And I have never been happier. There still are struggles, but at least I am creating life on my terms.

  7. This is very insightful! It is important that we make a conscience effort to lead the kind of life that makes us happy, and engages our personal talents. An unhappy life style can be changed, it’s a matter of taking those steps. I enjoyed this, thank you for sharing!

  8. This is a topic dear to my heart, as I believe in every moment, by the choices we make, we are creating our lives. Many people are conditioned by outside influences or pressures, as you mentioned and unfortunately this often contributes to disillusionment and a life lacking the joy and passion to experience fulfillment and contentment. Doing the inner work, the inner exploration, is really the only way to unleash the authentic YOU, leading you to the life you truly want to live. Really enjoyed this post A. Lynn. Thanks!

    1. I am so glad you enjoyed it Beverly! And you bring up a great point – by believing in every moment we are hopefully living IN the moment. I believe that is when we are closest to our true selves.
